Gorham was born in 1738, in Charlestown, MA, the eldest of a common family in Massachusetts colony. As a child, he had little education and at the age of 15, he was admitted to an apprenticeship at a trading firm in New London, CT. He left the company in 1759, returned to his hometown to set up a trading firm, and soon succeeded. In 1763, he married Rebecca Call and had 9 children. Gorham began his political career as a notary, but was soon elected to colonial legislature (1771-1775). He was a delegate to the Colonial Congress (1774-1775), a member of the Massachusetts War Council (1778-1781), a delegate to the Constitutional Convention (1779-1780) and a member of the Senate throughout the Senate ( 1780) and the House of Representatives (1781-1787) of the state, serving as President of the House of Representatives in 1781, 1782 and 1785. In the final year, despite a lack of basic legal knowledge, he also served as a Judge Middlesex County Civil Court (1785-1796), and concurrently joins the Council of Governors of the State (1788-1789).
